WARNING: The description below is graphic. This is the second, and larger of the two crematoriums at Dachau. This had to be built after the original crematorium was no longer large enough to handle the volume required to dispose of the bodies from the camp. If you look toward the left-hand sid of the building, you can just make out two metal shutes opened from the top (one is above the bush, the other above the cement table). These shutes opened into the "shower room". The Nazi's would have put gas canisters in these shutes to kill the prisoners inside who thought they had been brought to this area to take a shower. Tests show that this was never actually carried out at Dachau, although nobody knows why. Continuing through the building to the right, there was a room the Nazi's used to pile up the bodies while awaiting cremation. The last area, with the double doors, was the crematorium. The Nazi's estimated they could dispose of 350 bodies a day. By the end of the war, they were unable to dispose of bodies as quickly as they piled up as a result of disease, overwork, and starvation. |
